The Proverbs 31 Woman

In our world today I have witnessed that there are a couple of views that we have about the woman described in Proverbs 31.

  • We tend to believe that this woman is not what a real woman is because our society and       views change so much.
  • We believe that this woman is some kind of super woman and is way too perfect for us to live up to the standard.
  • Others don’t have a view because believe it or not some women have never heard of the Proverbs 31 woman.

There was a time when I did not know anything about a Proverbs 31 woman.  Then when I finally read the verses in the Bible my thought was this is some kind of superwoman and this is not real.  As a newlywed I listened to a sermon taught at a visiting church about this woman and then my thoughts were; this man cannot possibly be serious, we are in a new time, and this woman does not have a mind of her own, so on and so on.

Through my growing process God led me to discover more about this woman.  As I began to allow God to teach me who this woman truly was I started thinking to myself that this woman could actually be me.  Yes, this woman can be you too.  This woman I am sure had a past but she knew what her identity was in Christ and she did not let past experiences dictate who she was and how she treated those in her house and others around her.  There was even more excitement when I realized that this woman was not some super woman.  She was not relying on her own strength to get things done but she relied on the grace of God whose strength was made perfect in every area she felt weak in (2 Corinthians 12:9).

The virtuous woman as described in Proverbs 31 possessed many attributes but there are 22 specific virtues that are described in Proverbs 31; rare, trustworthy, consistent in her love, great home manager, industrious, self-starter, enterprising, hardworking, diligent, compassionate, willing to do repetitive work, prepared, talented, knows husband is head of her home, entrepreneur, grounded in faith, kind, focused, her family blesses her, wants the best God has for her, she fears the Lord, and she is praiseworthy!

As I began to outline the attributes of this woman this is when I truly began to see myself in the verses that was outlined.  We are not perfect and neither was this woman but we are all striving to reach perfection until the day of Christ’s return.  The Proverbs 31 woman is our standard because it is God’s standard.  These verses are not unattainable.  Allow, God to show you how you fit perfectly into being His signature woman.  A woman who does not measure her beauty from the outside, a woman who loves God, her husband, her children, and others, a woman that is blessed by her children and praised by her husband, a truly rare and virtuous woman.
